September 2024 - Win-win proposal unveiled (Athens, Greece)
The Parthenon Project hosted its first formal event in Greece to present its proposal on "A Win-Win Solution for the Reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures". The event featured distinguished speakers Lord Ed Vaizey, former UK Minister of State for Culture, Geoffrey Robertson KC, human rights barrister, Professor Nikos Alivizatos, constitutional scholar, and Thangam Debbonaire, former UK Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.
NOSTOS Strategies is a member of the internal advisory team supporting the Parthenon Project.
CAMBODIA
July 2024 - Cambodia welcomes home 14 antiquities from the Met in New York (Phnom Penh, Cambodia)
Following several years of negotiations, 14 antiquities linked to Douglas Latchford, a dealer of Cambodian art, were deaccessioned from the Met and returned to Cambodia. This is the most significant delivery of antiquities from the Met to Cambodia. NOSTOS Strategies is proud to stand alongside the Cambodian restitution team for this historic return of artefacts from one of the largest and most powerful cultural institutions in the world.
QINGDAO CONFERENCE
June 2024 - International Conference on the Protection and Return of Cultural Objects Removed from Colonial Contexts (Qingdao, China)
NOSTOS Strategies was invited to attend an international conference on the "Protection and Return of Cultural Objects Removed from Colonial Contexts", in Qingdao, China, as an International Expert. The conference was organised by the Alliance for Cultural Heritage in Asia and the National Cultural Heritage Administration of China.
PARTHENON PROJECT
Campaign for the reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures (London, UK)
NOSTOS Strategies advises the Parthenon Project, a campaign proposing a ‘cultural partnership’ between Greece and the UK which would see the Parthenon Sculptures currently housed in the British Museum reunified in Greece. This partnership agreement would also provide for the curation of rotating exhibitions of Greek masterpieces to be displayed in a Hellenic Gallery at the British Museum. The Parthenon Project maintains the exceptionality of the Parthenon Sculptures case.
UNESCO CONFERENCE
May 2024 - UNESCO International Conference (The Hague, The Netherlands)
NOSTOS Strategies attended the UNESCO International Conference “Cultural Heritage and Peace: Building on 70 years of The Hague Convention”, organised by UNESCO in cooperation with The Netherlands, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the UNESCO 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the event of Armed Conflict.
CAMBODIA
December 2023 - Return of 13 Cambodian artefacts from the Met (New York, USA)
The Metropolitan Museum in New York is set to return 13 Cambodian artefacts to Cambodia. These artefacts were all linked to the art dealer and collector Douglas Latchford. NOSTOS Strategies advises Bradley J. Gordon and his team in Phnom Penh representing Cambodia in the pursuit of its stolen antiquities from around the world.
V&A CONFERENCE
October 2023 - Conference on “Museums of the Future” (London, UK)
NOSTOS Strategies attended a conference at the V&A Museum on the future of museums. The conference featured discussions on equity in collections and representation, and strategies for reimagining a post-colonial museum.
APPG AFRICAN REPARATIONS
October 2023 - UK Reparations Conference on “Charting a Pathway to Reparative Justice” (London, UK)
NOSTOS Strategies attended the inaugural conference of the APPG-AR on African reparations and the restitution of cultural artefacts and ancestral remains.
ETHIOPIA
September 2023 - Ceremony marking the return of treasures looted in Maqdala (London, UK)
NOSTOS Strategies attended a reception hosted by The Scheherazade Foundation in collaboration with the Embassy of Ethiopia in the UK to to celebrate the return to Ethiopia of several artefacts taken by the British forces in Maqdala in 1868.
JAPAN
September 2023 - On-site research visit (Tokyo, Japan)
NOSTOS Strategies undertook an on-site research visit to Tokyo aimed at identifying artefacts held within various institutions. We have located several artefacts belonging to China, South Korea, Cambodia, and India, with unclear provenance and acquisition history.
