ETHIOPIA

CEREMONY marking the RETURN of treasures looted in maqdala

SEPTEMBER 2023, LONDON

On 21 September, NOSTOS Strategies attended a reception in London hosted by The Scheherazade Foundation to celebrate the return to Ethiopia of several artefacts taken by the British forces in Maqdala in 1868. The artefacts were handed over to H.E. Ambassador Teferi Meles Desta, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The Holy Tabot tablet of ‘Medhane’Alem’, a lock of Prince Alemayehu’s hair (the son of Emperor Tewodros II), three silver cups with bronze plating, and a shield were among the artefacts that have been returned.

Staff members from the Ethiopian Embassy, a delegation from the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the CEO and founder of The Scheherazade Foundation, Tahir Shah, UK resident historical heritage scholars, representatives from the Ethiopia’s National Heritage Restitution Committee, members of the British Parliament, and invited guests were present during the handover ceremony.

Coverage of the event can be found here and here.
